We'd prolly be flying around, like the Jetson's sooner ! Won't be here to see that happen either hahaha
Many areas don't have Wifi or cell coverage, like where my cabin is in the mountains. Bad weather driving conditions are everywhere, just as constant road construction and associated detours.
I don't foresee any widespread, profitable self-driving vehicles anytime soon.
*Prediction* Humans will be on Mars before we see self-driving tractor trailer rigs on a daily basis nationwide.
Think about all the issues that come into play.
Fueling? Big oil is not going to give up selling diesel. How will those trucks get fueled with no drivers? Every truck stop would have to spend millions on every facility to adapt. Then their high priced stores would have no drivers to cater to.
Trucks will still breakdown. Who will do something as basic as putting out the triangles? Who will put out the wheel chucks when necessary?
There are too many mega companies that will lose their cash cow if trucks go autonomous.
