I was wondering how many driving hours are required to complete CDL A course. I’m in North Carolina. Thanks

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Let me get into class tomorrow and grab my prior logbooks and I can tell you exactly how many hours I've driven and ~ miles. I'll probably log about 4 more between now and graduation which will include about an hour of the CDL driving test which is around 26 miles iirc.

Logbook:

A written or electronic record of a driver's duty status which must be maintained at all times. The driver records the amount of time spent driving, on-duty not driving, in the sleeper berth, or off duty. The enforcement of the Hours Of Service Rules (HOS) are based upon the entries put in a driver's logbook.

By law, none. To get a job you will need a 160 hour course. I got trained for free by CFI and I still drive for them.

There is not a specific number of driving hours required. You must have a 160 hour training course. That will include plenty of classroom time and even observation time while watching other students. The only specific requirement is 160 total hours of training.

Driving time is the costliest time for the school. Because of that it will be limited. With Paid CDL Training Programs you will get considerably more drive time because they will do it actually hauling freight. That's a plus for the student/permit holder. They will be getting actual on the job training.

I've gotten about 30-35 driving hours of me actually behind the wheel based on my logs. We didn't run logs the first couple weeks of the 8 week course but it was about 1 hour a day with us in the truck probably 5ish a day when we were taking turns driving.
