Hello im looking into going to trucking school in either central or north Florida as the schools in south FL seem to be all over the place looking to get my CDL A. Looking for a school that maybe offers housing or lodging as paying a hotel is a good amount out of pocket expense thank you

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Why not attend company sponsored training?

Company Sponsored Training:

A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.

The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.

If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.

Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.

All joking aside, Jose ~

Welcome to Trucking Truth!

PackRat is 100% spot on. Why NOT? Company paid is the best way to go; especially when location may be an issue.

Also... Sure would help us help you, if you'd put your location in the profile, where the space asks, so we DO know, FL.

Oftentimes, company paid training will HIRE from Florida for the most part??? Doesn't matter if their 'office' is there; they'll often pay for you to train wherever their premises may be, transportation included; as well as lodging, and some meals.

Have you looked at this?

It's really a great way to 'see' if you want to move forward with pursuit of this profession.

Here's an app, and yes . . . Florida people get hired, too! (I went to school in Florida; worked there...read my bio!)

Hope this helps: Apply For Paid CDL Training

Additionally, if Flatbed might be an option for you, Cypress Truck Lines in Jacksonville has an excellent training program, I've spoken to Clay and Pete; they guys that run the place... here~ Cypress Truck Lines / Trainingand if you mention Brett and Trucking Truth...they'll take you seriously.

Best wishes, from a former 'Manatee!'

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

My suggestion would be to apply with all of the companies willing to hire out of your zip code and worry about the lodging, etc after determining who extends an offer. If you contact them asking all kinds of questions without an application, you won't be taken seriously.

Oh really? When I am looking for the next possible company to drive for, I have a list of more than 50 questions I ask. Any company I call needs to have answers to each and every question then or by the following Friday. If I'm going to have questions, they better have answers. I would not settle on the first company that hands over a set of keys, or "they should cover that during your orientation" answers.

Ask questions here and ask questions of the recruiters, both.
