Sorry to hear of this Banks. Hope it works out for you.

I'm all good, G-Town. This was voluntary and the best option for me with where I am in seniority. Things could be a lot worse and I always land on my feet. My expected return date is in the end of May, but if prolonging this is an option, I might do that. We'll see then.

What about driving a school bus?

With what the school bus companies here pay, I make more on unemployment.

It takes a surprising amount of time and effort to get the school bus endorsement.

I looked into doing it part time a little over a year ago. They were trying hard to recruit and I figured I could help out because my mornings were free and I could spare 4 hours a day without a violation since FedEx and the school bus depot are right next to each other. They explained the process to me and talked me out of it simultaneously.

Nah, just secure them like any other cargo...Plenty of load locks, straps and duct tape to keep the ride quiet.

I have lots of time to Google stuff now, so I looked into this. Turns out, it's illegal. Kids nowadays are soft. When I was a kid, it was get in where you fit when it was time to jump in the car.

Your post did humble my pride and complaints about having to work an extra day every week, I should be thankful when other aren't as privileged

Thank you for the kind words. Things aren't really that bad, I'm just really bored. As far as work goes, I always took what I could get when there were extra days available and I'd advise everybody to do the same. Things are getting uglier out here and there's no telling when it'll get better.

Banks, it seems that your furlough has allowed you more time to post comments.

That is a good thing, I always appreciate your comments.

And about the school bus driving. Great gig for a retired person or someone who wants to work part time. I suppose if I wanted to drive a bus I would try to drive a city bus in a city.

Or Willy Nelson’s tour bus. Lol

FedEx drivers gone wild??

FedEx drivers gone wild??

No, not at all.

There are social media rules, but I don't know any of them so I took my laptop into the building to show them my.... uhm... content. They said I can't connect it to FedEx in any way.

You're lucky they didn't because I think it'd be amazing advertising and it'd probably put every other LTL company out of business.

Moral of the story is no FedEx drivers gone wild because they have rules or something.

LTL:

Less Than Truckload

Refers to carriers that make a lot of smaller pickups and deliveries for multiple customers as opposed to hauling one big load of freight for one customer. This type of hauling is normally done by companies with terminals scattered throughout the country where freight is sorted before being moved on to its destination.

LTL carriers include:

  • FedEx Freight
  • Con-way
  • YRC Freight
  • UPS
  • Old Dominion
  • Estes
  • Yellow-Roadway
  • ABF Freight
  • R+L Carrier

I actually just started a new job hauling produce to grocery stores. Most of the time city driving in Chicago. It’s misery but it will keep me busy until freight levels get back up and I can try again to get into linehaul.

Linehaul:

Linehaul drivers will normally run loads from terminal to terminal for LTL (Less than Truckload) companies.

LTL (Less Than Truckload) carriers will have Linehaul drivers and P&D drivers. The P&D drivers will deliver loads locally from the terminal and pick up loads returning them to the terminal. Linehaul drivers will then run truckloads from terminal to terminal.

Offered another furlough. May 28-August 27. Contemplating taking another job in the meantime.

I don't have to take this furlough and I can go back to work, but if they're offering it that means there isn't any work to go back to.

I was just wondering if you had heard anything.

The fact they are offering until August is concerning. I guess they are expecting it to pick up for holidays.

We are still really slow, for last week being the end of a month we called a bunch of guys off.

They're stretching it out 3 months at a time. I doubt we'll be busy in the winter because we never are.

I knew an extension was coming based on what I've been reading, but I got the official offer this morning. Honestly, I expect them to offer August to November in the beginning of August.

Ward Transport just recently opened a terminal here in Chicago. Been advertising for line-haul and city driver ever since. I applied and was surprised to get a call back almost immediately offering a run to Columbus and back every night.

You guys know anything about them?

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.
