Hello out there,

I've been doing hotshot freight for the last 6 years. 1099 work. Rates are way down, freight is scarce, way to many drivers. Just my 2 cents for what it is worth. I almost became a truck driver with the help of you folks here almost 6 years ago. Well, I'm going to pull the trigger this time. Even a new 2.0 highroad to dig into! I have much to learn, back to the drawing board, studying for my CLP now. I'm quite sure I will have questions/concerns along the way. Be well out there drivers.

Lance from NJ.

CLP:

Commercial Learner's Permit

Before getting their CDL, commercial drivers will receive their commercial learner's permit (CLP) upon passing the written portion of the CDL exam. They will not have to retake the written exam to get their CDL.

I don't want to sound Debbie Downer, but freight out here for the big boys isn't great either.

You probably find a company to hire you, just be aware some have slowed or even stopped.

Yes, Lance, choose wisely.

Refrigerated seems to stay pretty consistent, go with Prime maybe?

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

Welcome back, Lance! Good to have ya!

Even a new 2.0 highroad to dig into!

Dive in! We just released it very recently. If you find any problems with the questions, you'll see a button to report them. I created 691 of them from scratch, but most of the typos have been worked out. If you have any other problems with it, just let me know!

Six years is quite a long time. How was that going for you before things slowed recently? I'd be curious to know.

We're seeing companies slow down their hiring quite a bit. There's been a big influx of new drivers recently, which always happens when the economy slows. So you may not have the same choice of companies you might have during better times, but if your driving record is good, you'll find the opportunities you're looking for.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.
