Was pulling into a TA early this afternoon in Louisiana. A kid was standing next to the sign at the truck entrance. My first thought was “where are this kids parents that’s not a good place to stand.” He was filming on his phone the trucks pulling in and did the horn gesture. I blew the air horn and he lit up smiling. Made my day and made me feel like my job is pretty cool :)

I had a lineup of kids at the playground fence, all doing the arm pump at once. It made a difference in my day.

It used to be that kids riding in the family cars would do the arm pump when passing a truck. Heck, I used to do it when I was a kid in prehistoric times.

Nowadays, kids are rarely even looking out the window when in the car. They have their heads buried in their phones or tablets and are totally oblivious to what’s going on around them and the scenery. They are missing a lot that they could learn from observation when out for a drive. God forbid that they should ever have to find their way home, they wouldn’t recognize any landmarks.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

It always makes me smile more than them I think.

Best time I ever had was 1 1/2 years ago I got caught at the back of a very small town Christmas Parade. Kids were lined up for 3 blocks giving me the arm pump. I blew my train horn for all it could muster and seeing all those kids loving it warmed my heart.

Hell Yea Harvest! The “trucker salute” a true classic. If watching a bunch of kids get excited after you blow your horn does not bring a smile to your face while driving you should probably re-think you profession.

I drove past a kid at the side of the road on a BMX track. He stopped, pulled off his helmet and pumped his arm. That's probably the best thing about trucking!

I love when it happens but it's becoming even more rare. I find it happening more frequently going through small towns though you gotta be careful. I've gotten my 3 young children to start doing it to trucks. We'll go for a walk down our main street (US 69) and they'll get several trucks within a short time. Not only do my kids get super excited, but the drivers do as well.

I was thinking about how kids riding in cars used to do the arm pump. Now they are mostly on their phones, but the other thing is tinted windows. Can’t see the arm pump even if they were doing it.
