Hello again folks been awhile been hustling and busting hump and have the opportunity to acquire a 2017 cascadia from a friend who sells trucks and cars. Would it be wise to start my own authority or lease on with a carrier ?. I’m in my 40s and wanna get started on my own business but need some advice on which way to start either my own or lease on a company with my own truck ?

Don’t do it. Too risky, especially now.

Horrendous time to buy a truck. Many established o/o have parked their rigs because rates are so low.

I don’t want to discourage you in following your dream but you have left out alot of critical information.

How much experience do you have driving a truck?

How much experience do you have running a business??

What type of freight are you planning on hauling?

Are you planning on running power only or getting your own trailer??

Do you have your own potential customers?

What freight lanes are you looking at running??

Are you planning on running load boards using brokers??

How much have you been quoted for insurance??

How much cash on hand do you have for startup costs??

If you lease onto a company you run under their authority and insurance. You run their ELD. That means they call the shots.

This is just a quick starter group of questions you must have answers to before you buy a truck. If your under 5 years driving experience insurance will likely be very expensive.

Your friend wants to sell the cascadia, ok how is it setup? Is it spec’d for the work you intend to do with it. Trucks are not all equipped the same. You need the right truck for the right job.

Just some things for you to think about before making this big a decision.

Rates are in the toliet and not looking to improve in the near future. Fuel is probably going back up shortly given the saudi’s cutting production by 1 million barrels a day.

If you have any further questions just ask.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Day Cab:

A tractor which does not have a sleeper berth attached to it. Normally used for local routes where drivers go home every night.

Drop And Hook:

Drop and hook means the driver will drop one trailer and hook to another one.

In order to speed up the pickup and delivery process a driver may be instructed to drop their empty trailer and hook to one that is already loaded, or drop their loaded trailer and hook to one that is already empty. That way the driver will not have to wait for a trailer to be loaded or unloaded.

William, that clarifies things a lot. Might just work for you in your situation.

Everybody here is very cautious about encouraging drivers to get their own authority because most plans are not very well thought out and times are tough for OOs.

If you decide to do this, I hope it is successful for you. Good luck.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
