It's usually a phishing scam to get personal information or they'll provide a link that somebody will hit that installs malware on your device and gives them backdoor access to your information.

Scams evolve. Remember the Nigerian prince, then you had the relative in jail that needs bail money and the IRS calls that accepts payments in the form of Apple gift cards. This is just the newest evolution.

Even sicker, yet very sophisticated, is perfectly faking a know voice like a son or daughter to get money.

Get a phone call, "Mom, it's me and I've been kidnapped by "blank". Computer voice gets on the call and demands money be sent for a ransom amount.

This IS happening. Not just emails or scam telemarketing from Nigeria anymore.

That's all very disturbing. I'm not totally naive, yet it still surprises me that scumbags will resort to such despicable and cunning tactics to try and take what is not theirs from honest people.
