May be some of you guys can help. I want to get my CDL with one of the trucking schools. I applied to Wilson Logistics because they seemed to have the best training scenario and training pay. I went through the application process and never got a call back. When i called the recruiter to see where we were on my application, they stated they had better qualified applicants. When i asked what that meant i was told they get 1000 applications a day for 15 slots. If that is the case i would never encourage anyone to apply. If that is the case with all schools what real chance do I have of making this happen. Thanks for any and all help.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Hey Victor. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, as I'm not an expert. I'm just sharing my experience.

That being said, apply to multiple places. Many companies are featured here on TT, and you can get a good rundown of what they offer. Wilson turned me down as well before I accepted an offer from Prime Inc. Look for a company not based on just pay, but what you're looking to get out of your training. I went with Prime because they offer a pretty comprehensive training program, and it's essentially free if I drive for them for a year.

Also look at what you want to drive. Check out companies that offer those divisions. There are many options, don't limit yourself. :)

I was actually asking Victor. But you did offer him some solid advice so thanks for that.

Victor, right now you can’t be too picky about a company. Do your shopping around, due diligence, etc. But even if you can only get your foot in the door with a company you may have to take what you can get. You can make a change later on, but right now your main need is a job and gaining experience. Good luck. Apply everywhere you can.

You need to get rid of the defeatist attitude. You have no clue what the trucking world is like and you're equating it to what you know in the civilian world, which it's not.

What do you have on your driving record? Or do you have any other issues that would cause Wilson to say that they have better qualified candidates?

In this economy, you need to apply everywhere and take what you can get because most companies can be and are very choosy right now. If you want to drive bad enough you will have to go after it but you will get told a lot of "No's"and not getting a call back is a NO!

Even experienced drivers are having a hard time getting hired. One's record has to be spotless because the trucking companies insurance demands it.

Mike you are correct in that the OP could pay his way through a CDL school and get a license.

But then what???

He is out anywhere from 4-8k for a school and has zero experience.

Hiring is very tight right now and having a license does not get you in any door.

Experienced drivers are having trouble getting jobs in this economy.

Schools don’t care about your background to attend.

Employers do. He hasn’t said if he has any issues or not that could prevent him getting a job. Just 1 minor ticket can cause a company to choose someone else with no tickets.

If he gets his license and it goes stale he has wasted his money.
