Most aspects of the trucking biz seem great to be except one. I don't like being covered in sweat very much. If it's a burning hot night i'm going to want air conditioning ideally, so how exactly does this work? I've seen somewhat random things about being allowed to idle or having apu's or whatnot. Can i look forward to being able to stay somewhat cool or i should be prepared to roast in the summer?

APU:

Auxiliary Power Unit

On tractor trailers, and APU is a small diesel engine that powers a heat and air conditioning unit while charging the truck's main batteries at the same time. This allows the driver to remain comfortable in the cab and have access to electric power without running the main truck engine.

Having an APU helps save money in fuel costs and saves wear and tear on the main engine, though they tend to be expensive to install and maintain. Therefore only a very small percentage of the trucks on the road today come equipped with an APU.

James, I've never had a truck with an apu , but I do stay comfortable by idling when necessary. I have seen some drivers complain about their company's idling policies, but I have never had any problems. So as you are doing your research just check and make sure the company you choose will allow you to be comfortable on those sweltering summer nights and you should be in good shape.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

Hey James,

I do have an APU and the company I work for doesn`t give a flip how often it is used. They prefer it over idling to conserve fuel and keep costs low. You will definitely want to check with companies you are interested in though as Old School said.

I have never ever had to spend one night sweating while I was trying to get some sleep. Even in Las Vegas in the summer time when it reaches 120 degrees during the day. Never had an issue with idling. Even in California. Sure companies will talk to you about your idle times if they are super high but I have yet to run into the issue. I think Central(now Swift) used to charge the drivers if they were to high on their idle time but that is the only company that I have heard of that does that.

If your really concerned about this then look at Prime. All there trucks or at least most of their trucks have APU's so it will be an non issue.

I'd sooner buy a portable gas generator to run an air conditioner than sweat all night! Definitely going to ask that before I ever get employed by a big company!

I've already been eyeballing prime because it seems like the type of company that i could stay with after the first year instead of having to plan to switch up.

In regards to your statement about a big company..... Just remember the smaller companies are super strictly idling cause they really can't afford the extra fuel expense.
