Daniel wonders.

Looks like improvements have been made. Back in my day that's not how it went. (Am I old enough to say that yet?)

Well, that was January, 2015. If you want to use that as an excuse to be an Old Fart, be my guest.

Daniel responds,

When I started I had 3 weeks of team driving from the start then i went solo. Was an awful and dangerous program but luckily I survived. I'm glad things were fixed.

Ok so if i go with prime i'll get 3 weeks dispatched as solo... i thought i read somewhere it was only a week... hardly enough time, but 3 weeks should be good, i mean if you can't handle the truck after 3 weeks of having your hand held then i don't know what to say. I am currently planning on having my cdl already so it shouldn't be an issue but I was curious as to why they do it that way. i understand now.

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Daniel was talking about his time at Central Refrigerated. Prime's training time (if you go in with your CDL is 30,000 or 40,000 miles) with no experience. So 3 weeks training time at Prime is not accurate (how that idea got started I don't know). Most team operations at Prime (that is how your training time will be spent) average about 3,500 - 5,000 miles weekly (so you are talking about 2 -3 months before you can possibly go solo at Prime once training time starts). There will be weeks that you top 6,000+ miles in a week, and there will be weeks you will be lucky to get 2,500 miles. It happens, so don't be surprised.

Just wanted to dis-spell the notion that you will be solo in a very short period of time (won't happen at Prime).

no no no when i said 3 weeks solo i meant 3 weeks were the trainer is in passenger seat, awake with me helping me learn then the remainder of the time it's a team dispatch where one of us does our 11/14 then takes our 10 in the back while the other does their 11/14 then 10 hour in the back and over and over again till you get your 40k miles.

Well you don't do 11 hours straight. There's a 30 min break required after 8 hours of driving, plus there's stop time for meals, bathroom breaks, gas, eating, etc.

Some people enjoy driving for long hours. I like to joke I was born in a car during a road trip cause I love roadtrips so much.

Also I don't like being this kind of person on the internet, but you really need to work on your typing skills. It's one thing to type like that on social media such as twitter or facebook but in a more serious world like tt that was really painful to try to read and if you typed like that when sending a message to dm / fm or whatever it would look real bad.

I don't think I'm the best typist either but you need to put a little effort in, at least for our sake.

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

And those Off-Duty-not-driving do not count in your 11 hours pushing the pedal. (The 14 hour clock keeps ticking, so you have 2 hours of "padding". (also 1 hr for pre-trip/post-trip & other official business.)

SMS typing is dead. Everyone can either type with a keypad or better, simply talk to your smart phone. Save da quik wds fr fb or sompn els. I make about 50% of my posts using my smart phone when I'm on the road.
