I'm amazed that they won't give the go ahead to run over to Ft Wayne to pick it up.

You might try Greyhound again, if you're comfortable with that sort of thing (and if you didn't already try to pressure them). Tell them you had to go on without your luggage because of their mistake, and now you're stuck in Chicago with nothing and you can't get back to ft wayne any time soon. Seems like they should at least be able to put it on the next bus to Chicago.

I would see if I could get greyhound or swift to pay for you to rent an economy car and drive over there to pick up your stuff tomorrow. It seems that would be the least greyhound could do to correct their mistake and provide good customer service.

LittleTrucker, the following idea is not new to any planner: Suppose you are dropping in Chicago now, and you get a pre-plan from Gary, IN, to Toledo, OH. You just swing through Ft Wayne on the way! This would work for other destinations as well.

I'm home in Memphis for the weekend. I regularly get loads like this: pick up in Houston, TX, (stop in Memphis, though it's truly not on a direct route) deliver in Atlanta, GA.

Your DM can add a day or a half day to the schedule to give you the extra time. Your mentor shouldn't grumble too much.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

So you're saying just go get it? They won't care?

No, he's saying that hopefully your next route takes you close to or through the area and you can swing through to get it. If it does, let the dispatch know that you'll be right there and they will add on a little extra time. Had I read this a couple days back, I was just south of ft Wayne and would have gladly picked it up and brought it to you had they allowed it.

Well, you can't just drive around the country on your company's dime! But I bet your DM will let you know that was her plan. Also, you can ask her if that's OK. This would need some extra time between pick-up and delivery, and that's done by the DM. The best thing you can do is ask. The worst that could happen is "No".

Or how about another Swift truck from Ft. Wayne to Chicago or wherever you're heading next?
