When you drive for a company & you are ready to take your home time can you pick the days you want to be home or is it like they pick them for you? Another question I have is if you are out on the road & something came up & you needed to get home how does that work? Whether you have home time or not. Can they deny you? Is it like they say you gotta pay for your trip home yourself? & lastly I want to know for example say I needed to be off for let's say 4 days. Is it like when I work a regular job you can just be like " hey I need the 5th-9th off" & they be cool or is it like a problem or something? I know with regular jobs you don't get paid for the days you don't work so it's usually not a problem of you put in the dates ahead of time. Or say your at home for your 2 or 3 days home time & something came up where you needed an extra day or 2 to handle things. Just curious as to how these situations work. Thanks!

You would be the one to pick the dates. You just have to let them know about a week in advance so they can schedule you a load home. Also, don't forget that most companies require you to be out 2 to 3 weeks at least between home time periods. Know your company's home time policy.

If you have a family emergency, or you become very ill, I would imagine the company would work with you even if you don't have regular home time available yet.

I got to Prime Sept 21st. II got my license Oct 30th. Here you don't get hired as an employee u til you get your cdl. Two weeks later my mom needed heart surgery. I paid for the flight home and my trainer drove me to the airport. The Fleet manager wished me luck and told me to let him know how much time I needed. My trainer offered to keep my seat open for me Until Jan 1st if I needed. I chose to come back a week later cause I needed the money.

Legally i was an employee for only two weeks and they let me go home for a family emergency no questuns asked. Which was fabulous to me.. and I was suspicious. I thought I would get reprimanded later. Didnt happen. As for home time... my trainer told me to give her 2 weeks notice and she would make it happen. It has so far.

It seems that everyone gets the time they want as long as they give enough notice. keep in mind you aren't getting paid for those days... so some people split it between the two pay weeks... so two checks are a little short rather than one check being really short.

I have also learned the customers In my area so if I need hometime I can say "get me a run to Burlington to get home" which is helpful to them. Im.learning which customers ship and which receive in my area So I have an idea of how the places operate to make getting gto and leaving home easier

  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Fleet Manager:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

This is a priority question when you interview companies. Yes I said you interview companies. It's a 2 way street. All the big companies are knocking doors down to fill seats. I highly suggest you write out a series of questions to ask recruiters and list them in order of YOUR priorities. Hometime was important to me and thats how I landed my current job. I get home 3 weekends out of 4 usually and make what I want and they are perfectly fine with it.

Theron, since you've decided on Swift, here's some Home Time details. First, hauling freight is the company's priority. But you will nearly always get the dates you request.

Swift has a built in message on the Qualcomm (called HOME CALL) where you put in the start date and the zip code of the location you request. Hint: should you so desire, you can put in the zip code for Six Flags. You give them at least five days advance notice.

Sometimes you get a load going nearby your house, sometimes you get a load from "here" to "there", but your home stop is on the way, and the delivery is extra days away, allowing you to stop for your 2-4 days at home.

If you have a special request, like a Dr appointment, or if you need extra time to fix your car, talk with your DM. Reasonable requests shouldn't be a problem.

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.

I would also say theron if you have something really important to do. That you give the company 2 extra days to get you home. Loads to be funny. As for takeing emergency leave. I have hurd it go both ways with swift I have never had a problem, but I here some drivers have had a problem I think it might play into more with the relationship they have with there dm. Good luck.
