In Arizona you need your DOT physical before you take your permit test. I believe it is that way nationwide. If you are on ANY prescription drugs, Go see your personal Dr. BEFORE you fill out the DOT paperwork and see the FMCSA Medical examiner. There have been a couple of people on this forum recently who were sent home from school for certain prescriptions. Some may be allowed by the FMCSA but NOT by the Carrier. The main culprits seem to be Anti Depressants, ADHD medications and Sleeping medications. If you currently are on any of these meds, It would be best to talk to your OWN Doctor about some alternatives. It appears it can throw a wrench in the works and slow down the process. Good Luck Flattie C. ( I start with Swift on April 11th)

CSA:

Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA)

The CSA is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicle

FMCSA:

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

The FMCSA was established within the Department of Transportation on January 1, 2000. Their primary mission is to prevent commercial motor vehicle-related fatalities and injuries.

What Does The FMCSA Do?

  • Commercial Drivers' Licenses
  • Data and Analysis
  • Regulatory Compliance and Enforcement
  • Research and Technology
  • Safety Assistance
  • Support and Information Sharing

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Fm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

Errol, What about UGLY pets!

There is a"grandfather clause " where if you had a truck pet before September 17, 2007, they are OK. But a pet you had in your truck for at least 9 years should be pretty ugly by now!

Congratulations, Flatie! Welcome to Swift!

A fly in the ointment: Swift does have a pretty policy: no pets.

Thank you Errol! I am really excited about the trucking career and I can't wait to start! True! She told me No pets allowed in the truck. Urg! I got no choice but rehome my puppy to someone while im away. Next step is getting my permit and get whatever endorsement they offer for me!

Flatie plans ahead:

Next step is getting my permit and get whatever endorsement they offer for me!

Your DMV "offers" all the endorsements. It is possible to study and pass the tests for everything, but that might be a waste of time. Suppose you do go with Swift. (Where I am). They don't use multiple trailers. Or carry people in buses.

Hazmat has a test, but the endorsement requires a separate background check that cost over $100. (And Swift will pay that, so it won't be your expense.)

Good luck on completing your Swift app. Sorry for your doggy. But he'll be so happy to see you when you visit him!

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

Yes it's nationwide to take DOT before taking permit but I don't really have a problem since I'm not taking any medication and clean drug test. But thanks for the note. Good to hear another swifter here! Keep us posted with your journey. I will go to El Reno, OK big advantage to where I live.

Flatie, Swift will provide lunch on your first day of class. After that it's up to you. There is an ample hot and cold vendateria at the schools and many options for delivered food.

I saw that you mentioned Reno, as in NV. I have a good friend who is a DM at the Reno Terminal (Swift-Walmart). When you get to the point of hiring on full time let me know and I can introduce you to him through an email connection. He used to be my DM for 2 years in PA before he transferred to Reno.

Good luck!

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

No , El Reno Oklahoma I mean. But it'd be nice if you introduce me to him. I'm planing to be OTR for 6 months and see how it goes and maybe switch to dedicated with Walmart account?

I hava a follow up question. If I will get my permit before going to classes. Should I pay for the DOT and physical? Or swift will cover it for me?

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Physical and license fees are always on the student. Go ahead and get those before you go.

Noted. Another question, If I will take my permit before going does it mean I will graduate early instead of 3 weeks? I know class takes 3 weeks before you go on the road.
