Something else I was tight is to pull your elbows all the way into your sides. You don't need to turn anymore than your hand can move. In a straight back your "turn the wheel all the way" is wrong. It also makes a difference where your tandems are. The trailer will turn faster if the tandems are uo and slower if they are back.

Tandems:

Tandem Axles

A set of axles spaced close together, legally defined as more than 40 and less than 96 inches apart by the USDOT. Drivers tend to refer to the tandem axles on their trailer as just "tandems". You might hear a driver say, "I'm 400 pounds overweight on my tandems", referring to his trailer tandems, not his tractor tandems. Tractor tandems are generally just referred to as "drives" which is short for "drive axles".

I agree it sounds like you're correcting too much. I made a wrong turn today and had to straight back a half mile, and I still had a hard time keeping it completely straight the whole time. One of my instructors had a trick that still helps me keep it pretty straight--just keep the steering wheel moving. Rock it back and forth just a tad--not even quarter turns unless you start veering off course. I don't know why it works, but it does. Even if that doesn't work for you, avoid holding the wheel too long in one direction since corrections take a couple of seconds. Good luck

This is exactly what I do when backing my bass boat/trailer. My theory is, the constant counter steering keeps the trailer swaying back and forth so slight that it kind of snakes along in a straight line....dunno how else to describe it haha. Flatie, you got this! I can't wait to be down there in a court weeks or so!!!

Lynn points out:

My problem was even with slight corrections I always ended up moving too far left or right. I did eventually figure it out.

You can get tons of good advice in a forum column. It's a bit hard to describe in words and letters, but once you get it into your head it probably works.

Rainy points out turning just a tiny bit at the wheel is enough. Sure, you can't see anything happening back there, but move the trailer back ten feet and you'll see results.

Good for you Flatie. Congratulations. What a difference a day makes.

A quick word of encouragement, one of the best drivers assigned to my DC is a woman, 20 year veteran truck driver. She is 4' 11" and manages just fine; safe, professional, and very effective. You can do this!

If they can do it , then ofcourse I can do it too!!! It's 5 people who got sent home because of straightline backing..They just couldn't make it..

Thanks G-Town!! I know I can do that also!! 😊

They must be a lot more strict at this school compared to the Swift Academy I attended in Salt Lake City, Utah. You didn't get sent home during the training process. You got sent home after you completed the academy & it was time for you to test out. You had 3 tries then you were out.
