I just got fail #3 on my road test. My instructor has told me I'm a really good driver and he was surprised I failed once. I just can't seem to keep from making the one mistake that fails me. Part of the problem is nerves. I have a lot riding on this since I paid for my schooling out of pocket and each fail is another $160. Sorry for the essay but how can I calm my nerves during test day. I feel like I'm about to explode right before. Any tips I'd love on nerves and anything else

I looked at it as another day on the road. Our training was 8 weeks so I felt comfortable by test day. I just went through the motions and built my confidence with some successful shifts and nice turns. It's impossible not to be nervous, but stay focused on the positive things. If there was a way to not be nervous at all someone would have figured it out by now lol

Your ability to maintain focus and not allow your nerves and emotions to distract you is all part of learning. You know you can do this, right?

Try your best to place less emphasis on the ramifications of failing and focus on the positive fact that you know how to do this. I agree with CT,...clear your head of negative thoughts. Just drive...they want you to pass as much as you do.

Maybe give yourself permission to fail a couple more times. I understand the financial issue, but maybe if you go in thinking that it doesn't matter that much, you'll be more relaxed.

i bought a roll of Tums on the way to my test.

During the test tell the instructor everything you see..read the signs aloud, say "slow down at rail road tracks looking both ways....watching at the intersection that white car look likes he's going to pull out...sign says no littering". Not only does this take your mind off the test but shows the examiner you are paying attention and know what to do or look for. Also understand they dont expect perfection. They know you will mess up but they want to make sure you recover.

Hope this helps.

BTW ..what are you messing up?

First, remember your examiner has "seen it all before" from nervous drivers to people who really couldn't drive a semi down a driveway. So he's/ she's doing their job, and down inside I bet they really do want you to pass the test. They are on your side.

Second, I'm sure you've taken people home from work/ school/ church, etc. You drive and they give you directions. Put this kind of thought into your head, that you're just giving a friend a ride. Then you can focus on giving them the best ride possible.
