I like the big truck stop book, its 15 dollers I think had places that trucks path dose not have, also works when the phone dies. Mine also has a list of rest stops in it. Can be found at most petro and ta.

I agree with the others, figure out a way to use trucker path. The qualcomm disables most of the functions while you're moving, as you likely know, but I think if a second driver is logged in then they are enabled to allow it to be used from the other seat. But I've played around with that and I didn't find it very useful, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Tractor Man, answering that would be like choosing between the pretty teacher and the one that always gives you food.

I wish I had gone to your school.

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

Another way to reset the QC is when parked, there is an electrical shut off switch on the floor by the door under the driver seat. Turn it off for a few minutes. Mine won't soft boot with the buttons....only this way.

Get the book, and make a list of XLARGE truck stops every 100 miles with interstate and exit numbers before every trip. They are.more.likely to have parking a newbie can back into...go all the way to the last row if need be. Truckers are.lazy and hate to walk so the veterans park up front leaving space in the back with easy spots ;)

They have smaller pocket sized books and large ones. Be sure to look how the book lists the stops. Some do it by city name alphabetically (which I find harder to use) and some list by state and highway then exit number...much easier.

Interstate:

Commercial trade, business, movement of goods or money, or transportation from one state to another, regulated by the Federal Department Of Transportation (DOT).

When it is time to update your phone if you don't mind switching carriers than consider Cricket. They have an unlimited plan (no throttling) for $70 a month. $5 off if you use autopay. Crockett uses AT&T's towers. They are owned by AT&T so it makes sense. The only downside to this plan is the hotspot is not allowed

All of the suggestions are excellent... I would also suggest when you can afford it, get a trucking GPS from a major truckstop chain... I personally use a Rand Mcnally, and if I notice I'm not going to make it to my destination, I search for truck stops and/or rest areas along my route that I can plan on stopping at as close to the destination as I can get with more than 45 minutes of drive time left.....

Lol you are using NaviGo. When you were in training, you could use it on the fly, however, NaviGo is inaccessible when you are solo and the truck is moving. If you aren't teaming or training, it must be set when the truck is not moving.

You are doing nothing wrong. I highly recommend trucker path. It's free and awesome. If you decide to splurge there are several very nice truck gps devices, but nothing is a good substitute for an ATLAS.

Best wishes and happy rolling.

I can use my NaviGo to find truck stops while I am rolling. I do it quite a bit actually. I use both it and Trucker Path....and I have the book as a last resort if nothing is working. I have been out solo now for four months and have never had an issue using it while I was moving.

With so many great suggestions, there isn't time to thank everyone individually.

it doesn't surprise me that there was a heavy-handed reason why finding a truck/rest stop enroute was unavailable as I drive solo. it's ok to press buttons on the device during certain circumstances, but unacceptable during others. and it's ok for a driver to scramble for a place to shut down as their hours of service expire. it seems rather hypocritical of them.

I tried the truckerpath app and it didn't work. the installer 'could not parse the file'. gingerbread is an ancient OS and I am lucky that this phone has benefitted me as much as it has. I haven't got a clue as far as phones go. I guess I would go with android and galaxy. I also like the thought of being able to replace the battery with a spare if that is available, though I hear that ability is no longer available. phones are becoming like cars. they are deliberately made to throw away.

I also think it's worth it to go with a phone service that provides the ability to 'hotspot/tether'. I would like to use a laptop to access street view and google earth. this company likes to send me to places with NO way out (trucks not allowed and NOT the place to pickup or deliver), so I don't trust them.

thanks for the replies
