Nothing unusual about any of this Don. I had 5 physicals before I got my first truck driving job!

The redundancy in having a student redo their DOT physical even though said student may already possess one is simple, the company or school is just covering their backs. Many can go to their family or local physician and get their DOT card without a thorough examination.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Thanks, Jmart. On my itinerary sent from my recruiter, it states, "we will do your drug screen (hair follicle and urine) and your company DOT physical (if needed) on Friday." I called her last week to follow up and confirm some points, and she stated I would need to get a physical. She may have been referring to company orientation after I receive a CDL , but we were discussing school. Uhhh....I won't put my CFI t-shirt on and worry about company orientation, just quite yet. I am certain that I will have enough to concentrate on getting through school. Positive thoughts, Don, positive thoughts!

When I get to CFI next week, we new arrivals will be doing our drug tests and getting physicals. If we had to do physicals to get our CLP , why do we get another physical done at the schools? I am not referring to the drug tests, as that is a no-brainer. Seems like a waste of my $$ to get a physical to get my CLP, just to get another one a few weeks later.

Don, Unless something has changed in the last couple of months, if you already have had a physical, you will not need to get one at CFI. They do then for those that need them. You will need to submit to the urine/hair follicle drug screens m.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

BMI:

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

CLP:

Commercial Learner's Permit

Before getting their CDL, commercial drivers will receive their commercial learner's permit (CLP) upon passing the written portion of the CDL exam. They will not have to retake the written exam to get their CDL.

Don, i love ya, but you need to focus. now that you picked your company it is like your spreadsheet is lonely and wants info again.

focus on getting to school and learning to drive that truck. asking about why you must get a med card is futile. if the process requires it three or four times so be it. i had to get 3 physicals my first couple of months due to the sleep study issue...and i didnt have it. two years later...went through it all over again but this time they said i did. i hate it, but it is what it is.

then you asked about 8/2 which you dont need to master until after training and on your own.

focus on getting through school. get that CDL. worry about the other stuff later.

Data, Data, I need more data! I know these questions can be annoying, but I assure you I am focused on school. I am just waiting to leave. In the short time, I have been on this forum, I have asked quite a few questions that may seem a little advanced for my current status. My mindset is to at least be familiar with anything I may encounter or need at a later time, so as to expect them and not become as stressed due to my not being aware of them. Doesn't hurt to know/expect many of these things going in. When I get to MO for training, my focus will be on the training. I doubt I'll have time for anything else.

Its not annoying and we are perfectly happy to answer all of your questions. unfortunately, we have seen time and time again that new drivers concentrate on everything but driving and then fail.

one of our members was trained by another member. despite all of the wisdom the trainer had, the trainee zeroed in on leasing information. he bragged to us about how he was going to lease...even after the trainer recommended waiting a year. his first month solo he had 3 accidents and then was fired.

we just care

I cannot state emphatically enough how appreciative I am that you, and everyone else here care about the prospective drivers and rookies to take time out of your own lives to provide us with the solid advice that you do. Let me put your mind at ease by stating when I get to Joplin, I will be concentrating solely on each individual day doing everything I can to "pass' that particular day. I believe this will be the best approach to successfully obtain my CDL , which is Goal #1.

Don wants data...

Here is something that about 1/3rd of your school and CDL test will cover. This is the type of knowledge building you should be focused on as prudent preparation for school. As follows:

Pre-trip Inspection:

A pre-trip inspection is a thorough inspection of the truck completed before driving for the first time each day.

Federal and state laws require that drivers inspect their vehicles. Federal and state inspectors also may inspect your vehicles. If they judge a vehicle to be unsafe, they will put it “out of service” until it is repaired.

I did not read all the comments but if you just had your physical recently you will NOT have to do another physical for them. You will only need to do the Urine Drug screen and Hair Follicle test. I wouldn't actually worry about all the stuff you have to do right now and just concentrate on making it through school and then getting back to CFI. If you already spent the money you will get reimbursed by CFI once you are actually an employee and get through the Orientation. One step at a time.
