Jamie, yuo"ll be jsut fine. Thre aer ltos of Turkcers woh cant spell antyhting corrcetly. I wuoldn"t giev it a secnod thuohgt.
I can't think of anything a driver does that would be a deal breaker for you. In any job there will be written communication. Drivers do more reading than writing. If you've come this far in life, you must be able to function well enough. I don't have any direct knowledge about dyslexia so I hope I'm not steering you wrong.
Hello,
I'm looking to get more information about truck drivers with dyslexia. You can assume by me making this thread, that I have dyslexia.
Now I don't have any problems with understanding instructions, or being able to operate these trucks safely, etc. My main problem is just spelling, I can spell decently on my phone and when I can't spell something I tend to use the speech to text and write it on paper for example.
So my question is simple: Will having dyslexia affect my trucking career? Such as not getting hired, or being let go over having problems spelling without the use of your phone and or speech to text, etc.
Thanks for any information you can give me.
How did you do this post? Because it is perfect.

Grumpy he either got a little help from autocorrect or speech to text. Which he could possibly use as an aid when working with the Qualcomm.
And he would be just fine.

I look at applications all day, and if I rejected all of the ones that can't spell, I'd be home by noon every day. Being a good driver and being able to communicate is important. Remembering what vowels are in the word "Maintenance" is not. Maintenence? Sure I know what you mean. Maintanance? Got it. Manetenits? I can still figure out what you mean.
I would say 98% of apps have at least once of these words misspelled on it: "Logistics", "Trucking", "Employer/Unemployed", "Opportunity", "Dispatch", "Transportation", "Terminated", "Resigned"
Here are the ones (that I actually noticed) on the last app that came in:
famring resighned maintnence
You'll be fine Jamie. Best wishes to you.

Like you I am a functional dyslexic. While I am not a driver yet I had no problems in my 20 years in the Navy. Spell checker and f7 key in word is my best friend. If I am unsure if my auto correct is the right word in an important document then I ask my phone to define the word. Heck I even manage to read 10-15 books a year minimum just slowly.
For those who don't know not all dyslexia is the kind that makes numbers and letters move around; that's just the worst kind. The type I have (and I am guessing that Jamie has) is that I read by recognizing the shape of a word not too dissimilar from reading Japanese.
I deal with people every day that can't spell, from blue collar workers to college educated business owners.
I wouldn't worry too much about it. As Jrod said, if it is close, they can usually figure it out, many times context helps.

I was able to write this post so well simply because I used my phone to create this thread, but here is the catch. My spelling isn't terrible while using a phone/computer simply because that's how I taught myself how to spell, and it's more of using muscle memory to spell out each word. But when it comes to writing things down on paper without the use of my phone, that's where I start having problems. My mind goes blank, and I get a little frustrated. Because I should know how to spell these things, but I simply can't remember how. The only way I remember most of the time outside of basic words is imagining typing the word out, but this only works with words I commonly use.
Now my spelling in general is still limited, so for words I don't know how to spell, I use the speech to text feature on my phone or while using my computer I use the auto-correct when I almost spell it correctly or I simply Google the word.
I'm sure based off these replies, I shouldn't have any problems. But I figured I would ask just to make sure. Since I have no real problems with reading, understanding instructions, etc. It really only comes down to spelling(on paper). Which I will be fine as long as I can use my phone at times, or I can simply think of how I would type it. It's pretty weird and frustrating at times, since I'm not a stupid person.
