I would like to thank the people on this forum for the time they have taken to share experiences and informtion about the trucking industry . At 54 I have decided to try an otr career. I have been a commercial fisherman my whole life so far and I imagine this will be very interesting and challengeing.I went to NTI in Maine and finished on nov 8 and got my cdl on nov 15. I am going to Amherst,Wisconsin for orientation jan 15. I did not know about this forum until recently but have been enjoying reading about the industry almost every day. Thank you again.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

I was hoping to be there by then, but my road test isn't until the 14th. Maybe I'll get there before you finish.

At 54 and starting your second career, if you stay healthy, you can work as long as you want. I met several truck drivers who made this a career well into their 70's and beyond.

be safe out there

I'm 66 and getting back into it. So ur in good company. We have a more seasoned flatbedder who didn't start until he was I think 59. So even though he's younger than I am he has the grit to do flatbed work (sorry Old School) I meant adventure. We have a family here at TT. So don't be a stranger, ask your questions and someone will be more than willing to help.

Good luck.
