I have a laptop computer that I would like to use in my truck. On my phone settings, there is a switch for ‘hot spot’ which I have turned on. Does anybody know what I need to do next to connect the phone to the computer? Sorry for being such a tech Neanderthal.

Need to setup your wifi on your phone, give it a name then a password, after that find the wifi networks on your computer and connect to the one you named. On my phone i had to tap on the place on my phone where i turned on the hotspot to enter the settings for the wifi my phone was providing.

A couple things that I found out the hard way: you can have unlimited data on your phone plan but sometimes the hotspot data is limited, and it's easy to use a good chunk just watching youtube videos for a few hours. Also, if you have a windows laptop, go to the network settings for that connection and set it to 'metered'. Doing that will limit tbe amount of updating it does over that connection. Unfortunately, last I knew it was impossible to completely stop windows 10 from doing some updates whenever it wanted.

Kurt G very true! I used my cell as hot-spot for my 2 laptops, here in my 30 ft 5th wheel. Metro PCs $60 plan, well now they bumped it to 15 gigs per month from 10. Also, I was having to go buy more gigs once or twice a month... They used to be "top-up"of 1 gig for $5, later, they went to 2 gigs for $5.

Hell I was spending $120+ a month until then doubled up.... NO Carrier out there, has a true "Unlimited" hotspot/tether feature, (They'd lose too much $$) ONLY for texts and calls......I searched forever, looking for better 'gig' deals lol

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

After doing all this, go to your laptop and click on the wireless button at the bottom right and select your phone's hotspot name. Enter password and there you go!

I am not sure if anyone touched on this, but most carriers require you to pay to allow your phone to be a "Hot Spot" Just double check. Usually like a 10 dollar monthly fee.

The only non throttled "unlimited" comes on business plans. So if you can swing a business line you will generally have better, faster service.
