I’m looking for someone in my area (Kansas City, Missouri) that’ll let me train/practice in their truck so that I can take the test at the DMV to get my CDL.

I went through Roehl’s program but ended up failing the final test, and they’re charging me $7,000, which discourages me from going to another company to get my CDL because if I fail again I’ll probably end up owing north of $10,000+ to both companies and I’d rather not risk it. And also, I want to use my CDL to go into construction and company’s usually keep you in a contract for awhile so any alternative to being locked in somewhere would be more convenient for me and my situation. If anyone in the area (Kansas City, Missouri) is willing please let me know, it’ll be greatly appreciated.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

Did you fail Roehls final test, or the DMV test? If you passed all Roehls testing but only failed the state exam were you still given a 160 hour completion certificate?

It's highly unlikely you will find someone who is able to do that here. Most drivers here are company drivers and it's not allowed. The O/O will lose quite a bit of revenue to do so. Have you looked Into "1 day CDL" type things in your area? We have a few north of Des Moines that charge I believe $350 for 6ish hours of practice then allow you to use their equipment for the test.

Best thing I would advise is to get ahold of local CDL schools or maybe community colleges in your area and ask about some one-on-one remedial instruction. As Rob posted, 99% of the members here are driving a company vehicle, so borrowing a truck isn’t an option.good-luck.gif

I failed the state test, I wasn’t given any certificate they just sent me home the following day. And I’ve actually never heard of the 1 Day CDL programs until now, that’s likely the route that I’m gonna take because I found some in my area. Thanks for that bit of information it was very helpful.

Roehl won’t give out the certificate until the tuition is paid in full.

hopefully not having a 160 hour certificate doesn't prevent you from finding work. I'm not sure how construction companies handle new cdl holders but hopefully they will have some sort of training period. Keep in mind this plan may backfire if you can't get hired anywhere and need to go to a mega OTR carrier where they may require you to go through their school as you lack the certificate until Roehl is paid and many companies want you there after school anywhere from 30 to 90 days.

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Dominique...how many times did you attempt to pass the state CDL test?

Others please chime-in here; I personally know of no company offering Paid CDL Training Programs that send a student packing after one, or even two failed attempts.

Many successful/experienced drivers on this forum required multiple attempts to pass.

I believe Avatarr had failed the road test 3 times at Roehl before being sent home. I've seen many posts here that say prime allows 3 attempts for each section before sending you home.

You could try getting a job as a yard jocky. It should get you good at backing and if you can find one that has a 10 speed transmission that would be even better. Combined with all the skills you already learned in school you should have a better chance of passing. I think if you told the boss man at one of them places your goals he would be happy to help you achieve your goals.

There is more to this story. I’m a Roehl grad. All though several years now, but I had 2 classmates that took the state exam in wisconsin twice before they passed. I’m sorry but 1 and done there does not sound right to me

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.
