I was stuck sitting in an accident on westbound I-40 in New Mexico. We'd only been setting about a half hour when I saw a young driver in the truck ahead of me in the left lane get out and walk across the median. I thought he was just stretching his legs. He gets back into the truck and drives across the median. Couldn't believe what I was seeing... I did shoot video of it I just can't figure out how to load it onto this site. I saw a tanker slowing down as he was making his turn into the eastbound Lane and as soon as the tanker got next to him he laid on the horn. It's the kind of thing you see on YouTube and I saw it happen in front of me. Like I said making decisions like this wonder how long this guy will keep his CDL? Anyone one has a way for me to load the video let me know.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I’ve got to wonder (unless it’s a dash cam) if you could get dinged for shooting video “while operating a commercial vehicle” even if you are stopped in traffic. Know they can get you for it at a stoplight or while stopped for a dot inspection.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

I have seen videos on YouTube of guys recording DOT inspections. And Truck Drivers recording accidents in truck stops. I had been sitting for a half hour, I was in neutral with my brakes pulled. It was almost halfway across the median when I thought I got to record this.

I can recommend a good dash cam for ya. I bought a garmin 45 from pilot. If you want to record something you just hold a button on the camera for a second and it will save all footage from 3 minutes before you pressed the button. Basically, if you see something you want to record, wait until the incident is over (if less than 3 minutes) then hold the save button to save it. You can play it on your phone later via bluetooth or upload it if you want.

The Garmin 55 is voice activated

Ok Garmin, save video ( or take a picture)

Oh, wow! That would make it even easier to capture video of drivers doing unsafe things.

I love mine, but sometimes it says it saved a video or picture and it doesn’t. Card is too small as well. Max 64 gb

Can you change out the card for big GB? Say maybe 128.

Really? If it wasn't safe, JYK9 wouldn't have done it. He's not foolish. I would have recorded it too.
