If I do a pretrip and then fuel, it still shows on the same line of the log. I would be on duty for pretrip, then when you drive to the fuel pump you are still on duty, so the second remark is set to fueling.

I routinely fuel then post trip. Both are remarks on the same on duty line

At least with AOBRD, I just switched to ELD.

I’m more of less reiterating points already made here... I haul HAZMAT regularly, for the past 2.5 years; whenever I fuel I always combine it with pre- or post- trip when possible, as well as adding the “tire check,” as the tire check is required when under a HAZMAT load. So sometimes in the morning, my On Duty time will show the remarks “Pre-Trip/Tire Check” and “Fueling.”

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

Thank you all for your input! I had a feeling it would be one of those things that is technically illegal but done regularly. I can see where it saves you some time. Thank you all and trucking truth!

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

It's fine to pretrip while fueling; however, placarded vehicles are a different story. From the Hazardous Materials Compliance Pocketbook:

"When a marked or placarded vehicle is being fueled, the engine must be shut off and a person must be in control of the fueling process at the point where the fuel tank is filled."

That's a good catch, Matt.

To do both legally you can be in control of the fuel nozzle while the fuel is pumping, then do a pre-trip after you have shut the fuel off. As a courtesy you should pull up and park past the fuel pumps to allow the next driver to fuel while you are doing your pre-trip.

All perfectly legal and courteous at the same time.
