Hey yall I'm a US Navy vet and after some soul searching I'm trying to make the move into being a trucker and I'm looking for some guidance.

First and foremost speed is crucial, it doesn't matter if it's the best deal on earth if it takes me 6 months to get started, because my savings are starting to run dry and I don't think it will be easy to get any job if I don't have a house and/or car.

I don't have my CDL so I have to find a place to get one, I heard some places that will pay you to get your CDL, that seems like a deal too good to be true to me. Are those companies typically not so great and they use that as a lure or are there actual decent companies with such programs?

As stated in the title I have two pets. Now I understand I may have to get someone to pet sit at least one of them when I'm riding with a trainer but afterwords it's very important to me that I get to keep both of them (let's just say they've both helped me through a very very rough period in my life). My friend told me there are companies with pet policies but I'm having trouble finding how common it is to let you have two pets on the truck with you. Are there any companies that have pet policies like that which are beginner driver friendly?

If it helps answer any of these question like I said I'm a US Navy vet and I'm located in the San Antonio, TX area.

Thank yall ahead of time for your help!

You will actually have to have someone pet sit BOTH of them while you're with a trainer. There are some companies that will allow 2 pets but not many. Are they big, small, dogs, cats or what?

You can actually go from CDL permit to driving solo in a matter of a couple months. Someone will post some links for you shortly I'm sure. Most of us highly recommend company training since they pay for school and employ you once you get your CDL. School is usually 2-3 weeks and generally 3 weeks to 3 months for training.

Good luck with finding the right company for you.

Hey Jason,

Like most companies CFI loves Vets. Thank you for your service. One of our main safety people is retired Navy. We have trucks to honor all branches of service.

CFI will pay for your training. Use the High Road CDL Training Program to study for you CDL permit. You will need your permit and DOT medical prior to training. Save receipts for those and CFI will reimburse you for it. They also reimburse for your hazmat background check as well as hazmat and tanker endorsements. They also reimburse for your CDL license and renewal. They also reimburse your DOT physical renewal.

Once they accept you they will get you to Joplin, then you will have three weeks of CDL school, followed by three days of orientation. After that it's out with your finisher/trainer for 21 days. You are dispatched as a solo truck during this time, you do all the work. Then it's back to Joplin to upgrade and get a truck. You can check with them, they may have a way for you to get your permit and or medical in Missouri.

As far as your pets, you will need to have someone care for them until you upgrade. Then once you get your truck, you get your pet pass and go home for your dogs and whatever else you need.

I hope this helps.

Jim Palmer/Will Trans will allow 2 pets. prime only allows one under 30 pounds as a company driver, but 2 as a lease Op with no size limit. We do not recommend leasing for new drivers due to the devastating possibilities.

Yes both pets will be forbidden from training

Good luck

Sorry I should have mentioned that. One is a cat and the other is a 50lb dog.

Still would have to have them cared for while you train. You don't need that distraction while you're trying to learn everything.

Oh and my friend who started with Melton (but he's since moved on I believe) said he had the option of picking a pet friendly trainer. Is that just a Melton thing then?

I don't know CFI's policy for that. You would have to ask.

We went through this before with another driver trying to find a company that would allow a dog during training and even the company he found would allow the dog in the hotel during their schooling, but not OTR during training. I jist found out GPTransco will allow more than one pet, but not sure if they sponsor schooling. I will find out

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
