3ish years ago I posted an article that said half of all trucks would be automated in 5 years, It has yet to happen.

Don't pay much attention to those stories, they are overly optimistic at best. Trucks will need drivers for a long time to come.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Driverless anything will be a pipe dream at best. Without a massive reconstruction of the entire nation's roadways (Interstates, secondary, and residential) the system just won't work. Satellite systems are only accurate to within say, 50 feet at best? Not bad when looking for a stationary object, but horrible when telling an 80,000 pound death machine where it needs to be in downtown. Interstates have decent lane markings for lane departure systems, but secondary and residential areas, at least here in the mountain state of West Virginia, not so much. I don't claim any first hand knowledge of what it would take, but I'll hazard a guess that the cost would be astronomical.

Interstate:

Commercial trade, business, movement of goods or money, or transportation from one state to another, regulated by the Federal Department Of Transportation (DOT).

The transcript of this story at https://www.cbsnews.com/news/driverless-trucks-could-disrupt-the-trucking-industry-as-soon-as-2021-60-minutes-2021-08-15/ is the same one that came out around early 2020, I believe. I specifically remember the mention of a trooper using hand signals. I wonder if this is a complete re-run or if it will include anything new.

Sheesh; the 'man' himself, even admitted to 'epic fail' last month.

Sixty minutes (propaganda) and affiliates, just 'glean' ... headlines!

Here ya go:

Admission of crash..autopilot mode.

Brett has SO MANY ARTICLES (on this....) use the search!

Dave W .. who is on hiatus for a spell .. has spent a LOT of time searching & posting, as well.

If you are going to do this .. driving.. then just DO, and don't look BACK, but for what you need to see! Chances are, it won't be a 'driverless' truck...in the rear view ~~ Focus on ... your commission to the mission. Just my 2cents..

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.
