Uncommon to go there, but it was all forced dispatch from my brief experience there. You will be expected to travel wherever dispatch tells you.
Todd, I wouldn't worry about that right now. I know that sounds easy coming from someone else. We tend to focus on all the wrong things when we are trying to start a trucking career. I just think you have a lot more things to focus on than being concerned if you are going to be forced to NYC. You won't go there very often anyway, and I doubt they will be sending a rookie driver into such a place.
I don't think we go into Manhattan. I have driven through the outskirts heading to and from Connecticut. They do not force NYC if a load was going there. We have some freight going to LI, but that's mostly dedicated.
Your sweating the small stuff.
NY is not the worst thing, Boston is quite comparable. Or take NJ, I had a delivery to Jetro in Jersey City yesterday, and it was a really bad place...

During my brief stint, I drove in Connecticut and New Jersey. Like Big Scott says, I skirted NYC. I did deliveries in downtown Chicago that were a challenge. But I never worried about NYC because I didn't think the company would send a rookie there.
I lived and drove in NYC for 2 years (civilian car) . I think NYC drivers are more bark than bite. However, that doesn't change the driving/backing issues.
All things said, I wouldn't drive in NYC if I could find a way not to. But I doubt that will be an issue for you.
