What A Day - Snow Storm

Got stuck in a loading dock today due to it being at a slope. Cedar Rapids IA area picked up around 9 inches of snow and freezing rain. What a stressful day.

0732867001676593709.jpg after he pulled me up and on flat ground still couldn't gain traction so he pushed me from the back. Unfortunately I'm still slip seating (brand new assigned truck I'm set to receive came in damaged) otherwise I'd have had a bag of salt and sand with me. Oh yeah, even more exciting was the windy 2 lane roads on compacted ice relying on the rumble strips to safely navigate curves. Unfortunately there was no where to go to get off this road after I'd gotten off the interstate. When I got there I was told they didn't even expect me to show up today.

About 2 hours before that I-380 north of cedar rapids got shut down due to a jack knife blocking all lanes. Highway patrol forced us off and we all went the same way. Very hilly terrain to the point I was coming down the hill doing 15 and felt myself sliding alot. Before I started climbing the hill I realized someone was stuck on the hill.

0354886001676594073.jpg AFTER he was stuck the sand truck came through. Wrecker was going to be an hour and a half out but a Ram pickup came out of no where and pulled him to the top. The bus in pic had gone around the truck after sand got thrown down I was next in line but wasn't going to risk it. Honestly, I was somewhat happy it was him who got stuck since I was empty and likely would've suffered the same fate. The hill is also longer than it appears. Since I'd stopped on flat ground I waited until the Ram had him nearly to the top before I started going up to avoid needing to come to a stop while they unhooked the chain. According to the CB on the same hill I slid down other trucks did as well, including a hazmat tanker sliding into a flatbed. I heard that police were on the way but I don't believe there was a leak. This road was blocked for nearly an hour. Of course once we finally got rolling again the interstate was back open too.

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

Interstate:

Commercial trade, business, movement of goods or money, or transportation from one state to another, regulated by the Federal Department Of Transportation (DOT).

Wow Rob!!! That's a heck of a day! Weather was brutal in most parts of the Midwest. Glad it all worked out for you.

When I saw the weather radar this morning, you were the first thing that came to mind. I wish you'd stayed home and made snowmen with the kiddos today, but glad you survived.

Oh, man. What a bummer! I was headed that way. I've been watching the radar and weather for a couple of days. I saw something about the 380 being shut down last night. I shut down yesterday to take a 34 and will start again on Sunday. Hopefully, all will be clear by then. Take care out there.

The kids had school like normal. We only picked up 2 1/2 inches here in town according to my neighbor. Most of the snow is already melted. Good thing we're getting another nasty storm next week that's supposed to last 3 days *sarcasm*.

It seemed like 380 and 80 closed several times due to wrecks and reopened an hour or so later. It's too early to tell specifics but another storm next Tuesday thru Thursday is expected to hit the area. According to a report i read earlier Twin cities is forecast for atleast a foot of snow, central Iowa will be primarily rain Tuesday and part of Wednesday with freezing rain mixed in as well. Definitely something to keep an eye on as it gets closer.

Glad you made it through that ok.

I would be in trouble, a single axle pulling a set would be a mess in that situation.

I was stuck like chuck at a dock yesterday I thought I was good because I put one chain on, and that's usually enough. I even went back and forth a few times to make a trail to get out. Then after I'm done goes an inch and spins. I had two other chains on, that I had to get on by spinning the tires because I couldn't back up or go forward and still was stuck. Till a bobcat that was plowing the lot pulled me out. I also found those spider bungees are crap because two broke while connecting them to the chains

I-80 across Donner's has been closed since Sunday afternoon. It is still closed.

US 58 between Bakersfield and Barstow had snow Monday night and the road was closed. Yesterday when I came through mid-morning it was wet but open. I got up to the Port of Oakland, got rid of my can and got an empty. Ran over this morning to Manteca to get my load and looked at my routing and US 58 is closed again. One of our drivers is sitting down there in the closure and he said it snowed last night and many trucks wrecked. It's closed while they clean the roads. Hopefully I will be loaded soon and then I guess we toss a coin to see which way I'm going to go. I'd rather go south I've chained up 5 times going over Donner's this winter!

Don't the new California chain laws make you have to chain your trailer too?

That's nothing new. "Drag Chain" requirements have been in place in some states for years, including California. It all depends on the "Snow Chains Condition" or "Traction Laws" for a particular area set by state or local authorities.
