Is obtaining a TWIC card really necessary or is it a scam for getting more money out of you? I just applied for one due to a job application and it is going to cost me $125 to get it.

Thank you,

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

No it’s not a scam. You can pay 100-200 a pop for an escort if you go to a customer that requires a twic card. That price is for a one time escort.

Ports, miltary bases, and many chemical plants require them. All about security. With it they know a full background check has been done and there should be no issues.

It comes down to if your employer requires it or not.

Most any carrier will reimburse you for the TWIC cost if their freight requires it.

It's a necessary evil. If this job doesn't work out for some reason you'll have it if your next job needs it. Having one also gets you a discount on a hazmat endorsement (same background check).

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

You got a discount from the fed’s??? I sure didn’t when I renewed mine 2 years ago. They charged me full price for each, as well as fingerprinted me twice.

Not a scam. Like PJ said, it's needed for military bases and the Ports. The card is issued for 5 years and to renew it, it's the same price but renews quicker than the original TWIC. I use my TWIC card for running containers to the port every week.

Your TWIC card works wonders at the airport too. When boarding for a flight your TWIC card allows you to pass quickly through any TSA delays.

I didn't get the discount because I was told if I did, they'd have the same expiration so I'd basically be losing a year of validity. Maybe that was the scam haha. I don't think I'll be needing it with my current carrier but glad to have it as I don't know where this industry will lead me.

This! You are a "trusted traveler" status. I haven't tested the theory, as I always used my passport and got in line like all the other peons :p
