I've never used an APU. I've never really felt the need. Generally the savings is washed out by the initial cost and the maintenance.
You say you are "new to driving." How did this become one of your concerns?
On tractor trailers, and APU is a small diesel engine that powers a heat and air conditioning unit while charging the truck's main batteries at the same time. This allows the driver to remain comfortable in the cab and have access to electric power without running the main truck engine.
Having an APU helps save money in fuel costs and saves wear and tear on the main engine, though they tend to be expensive to install and maintain. Therefore only a very small percentage of the trucks on the road today come equipped with an APU.
I have a thermoking tripac on my truck. I love it. Minimal expense for upkeep and I set it and forget it. Keeps the inside at whatever temp is set and keeps batteries charged. If you run in the cold get it with the artic package. Keeps your coolant warm. Uses approx 1 pint of fuel per hour. Keeps alot of unecessary idling off the big motor.
Yes, these are nice to have if the company is paying for it. Cost of a new one and installation is well over $10K.
All of our company trucks have the TK units. Personally, I’ve never had a minute of trouble with it on any of the trucks I’ve driven for two different companies.
I like TK better than Rigmaster. Seems less maintenace issues and better warranty.

I'm new to driving and due to the regulations and wanting to save money on idling, been considering the Thermo King Tripac...what is your experience with those as seasoned drivers?
