Good luck with it. Hope it turns out OK. I personally have a hard time going back to running a business and staying out of the field. I find it mentally taxing to manage people.

I've had several offers from builders for subdivisions, although it would be extremely lucrative, I just don't want it. No interest at all.

Let us know how it goes.

Oof, just the thought of going straight into an audit substantiates not only my hesitancy of going into a job like that, but also my lack of desire to leave a job of relative simplicity for one of pencil pushing, oversight, and stress.

You're a tougher man than I am, PJ. I'm sure you'll excel at this. Hopefully it brings you the fulfillment you need. Good luck!

Thanks ya’ll. I got home this morning. I have some cramming to do. My wife is in the office and I have the insight and list for the audit. She pulled everyone together last week to get things ready. She told me this morning they are 90% there with what can be done, but she expects some lumps. We’re putting some straitages together for correction going forward.

We will be doing some much needed training among other things.

I reckon I just love a good challenge, or just crazy. Some days not sure which, lol. This will certainly be a huge challenge. We will be putting together 1-3-5 yr business plans and setting goals. I’ll be bringing in a small group of customers, to go along with the existing ones.

Well ya’ll the audit from DOT is over, thankfully. My wife is about to pull her hair out. I have helped out, but not fully committed to anything. I wanted to see how it would exactly go and what movement is there after the final report.

I have been going through 2 audits at once. My new entrant audit has been going on as well as helping on my friend’s. Talk about double trouble.

I got my results yesterday. Spotless audit. My insurance is even going down a little because of it!!!Yay!!!

I’m more of a consultant to my friend at this point. My wife is working very hard to get them where they need to be. I’ll see how it goes. It’s just my nature to be cautious. I need to see some positive results, not just hear we want to get things going in the right direction.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Great news PJ on your audit. After meeting you I can believe that you had all your ducks in a row. No matter what you do it will be with dedication, professionalism and commitment to being right and legal. I look forward to meeting you again some day. We're in Pensacola, Fl. for May and then we will be in Guntersville, Al. from June thru October.

Thanks Navypop. Your comments mean alot to me.

I’m going to move slow and methodical on this. I’ve had several very candid and honest conversations with my friend about his organization. I believe he has the drive and determination to turn this around, but it sure isn’t going to be easy. My wife is capable of doing it with my occassional input. I’ll be staying closer to home and kinda be pulling some double duty at times.

Thought I would give ya’ll an update.

My wife and I have helped make some very positive gains in my friend’s business. Still alot of work to do, but moving in a positive direction. I stayed helping through more of a consulting role while still running my business. It has been a handful to say the least.

With the market and some life’s challenges I have decided to sell my business. We’ve spent alot of time discussing it and getting a valuation done. I have a couple interested parties so we will see what happens.

I’ve been at this almost 10 years and owning my own business for 5. I’m getting tired, not of the driving but of all the time and stuff that goes into the business end, while driving. It has been a hard decision for sure, but I believe it’s the right time for my wife and I. Then I can spend more time helping my friend, but more importantly spending some time visting grandkids, my older sibilings and maybe some more time with my wife!!!

PJ, glad to hear things are coming into focus for you. I take it as a positive sign that things at your friend’s operation are going well, otherwise you wouldn’t be selling your business.

And the old Bible quote about not trying to serve two masters comes to my mind. Over the years I’ve been guilty of doing that and it never works out well.

PJ, I wish you all the good luck that you surely deserve. I know first hand that after my 43 year and 3 million mile career you miss the driving but not the hassles. My wife and I have totally enjoyed the 12 years since I retired and traveling in the 5th wheel.

You deserve the rest and I hope that you and the Mrs. enjoy your new adventures. Good luck my friend and do not be a stranger here.
