Hi folks, I'm about halfway through a 34 hour reset near Coalinga, CA. I'm honestly not sure I'll be able to make it another 17 hours. It's the stench. It hits you like a wall the second you roll down the window. I mean bad. Like, hard to keep food down bad. In the truck, with the recirculating air and my glade plug ins, it's at least bearable. Apparently I'm just downwind of one of the largest cattle operations in the world. Here's an article written about how bad this town smells:

Lemme hear some reset horror stores.

Now your in my old stomping grounds. That smell according to Harris Ranch is the smell of money, lol. I lived in Lemoore east on 198 about 30 miles for 32 years.

But your very correct the smell is horrible. You should have went a little further to Kettleman City. You will certainly know for next time!!

Forgot to mention the flies. Anywhere there is stench and death, there will be flies, clouds of them. It seems like for every second the door or window is open, a fly gets in. As I shoo out 5, 7 more enter. But there's a Carl's Jr., so there's that.

Are you still in the mood for hiking? Are you at a truck stop? Perhaps you could purchase an air freshener. Also look out for honey bees. The farmers use them to pollinate their crops.

I'm sure it does smell like money to Mr Harris, whom as the article I linked notes, lives 100 miles away and flies in on his Cessna to check on operations. Lesson learned here.

Gotta love the smell of that Dairy-air.

They say not to kill a fly because if you do 50 of its relatives come for the funeral.

Feed lots and slaughter houses have a very distinctive odor. Even when driving at night, I can always tell when I’m near one.

I've never had to do a 34 near a cattle place I'm happy to say. But I've driven past enough of them to know that distinctive smell. I'll tell you what smells worse, in my opinion, are chicken processing plants. I don't eat chicken or any kind of poultry anymore. I can't do it. Just seeing a chicken, cooked or uncooked, conjures memories of the awful stench of those places!

Used to be a chicken farm (big 1) along side of the I-605 south bound, you could smell it a mile away as you were driving. I lived around the same valley cities, luckily not close to that place lol..

Another, I took a diesel mechanic job, down on Bandini Blvd, for a haz mat tanker company. They needed an engine guy, and all around. Was just me, and the supervisor. I remember, when I went to meet him at the shop in the back of the terminal. Well, they were next to a carcass processing plant on the other side of the wall....You could see the conveyor line over the wall, right up against it. They brought in 55 gallon drums full of road kill, scraps from Farmer John's up the road, etc......

That stench was extremely bad, I asked the 2 guys, sitting in the shop, eating lunch at a picnic table.... The flies ! OMG they were big ass horse flies (later I found tons of big spider webs between trucks every morning, yeah free flie food hahaha

"How the hell can you 2 sit there and eat like it's nothing? I'm about to gag" They said, "Oh, you will get used to it"......I took the job, and YES, by the first week, I was "used to" the stench lol

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

I must agree with RD about the chicken places. Worse than the beef and hog processing plants. Plus, at the chicken plants there are always puddles of green, pea soup waste water that need to be avoided and stink.

I do pick up from a Hostess facility that produces baked products and that place smells great.
