I applied to school with Prime Inc. and received a letter back that they are not taking students from my area at this time. I live in southern New Mexico about 100 miles from El Paso Texas. Apparently this is some kind of thing, as 2 other companies that I applied to for their CDL program also told me the same thing. My other option is to go to a community college or private school, but the closest one is in El Paso 100 miles away, and I can’t afford it out of pocket. How does one get a sponsorship, for training at a school. I didn’t know it was gonna be this hard, and that my area was going to be the hold up.

CDL:

  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.

Go to a company from another area. They pay for travel to their facility and will either house you or pay for a motel while you attend training. At least that was my experience.

Oops, I misread your post. You being from Southern NM is the issue. I don't know what to tell you. Contact all the comlanies you can until you find one that accepts your home location. Hope you find one.

Have you tried CFI?

Have tried every place and all do not hire from this area. No freight here. Wow! There are CDL schools and some places who do internships. Have to figure out how to pay for this.

According to your own words...

all do not hire from this area.

Why would you pay for training if no one will hire from your area? Does that really sound like a smart idea? You're going to lay out about four or five thousand dollars, be in debt, and still be unemployed. Does that really sound appealing to you?

Look, you first posted less than 24 hous ago. Now you're acting like you've exhausted every opportunity in less than one day. Something is missing here. You need to slow down and be deliberate.

You've been very vague about your area. Border towns like Laredo and El Paso are buzzing with trucking activity. Have you looked at or contacted Mesilla Valley Trucking Co.?

I'm not sure what's going on here, but something doesn't seem right. I know you haven't tried every place as you say. What about Swift or CR England? They have a lot of work out West. There may be something else that is disqualifying you, but I don't think it is your area.

You said;

If there are schools in your area, why not talk to them to find out who hires from their school? Even if you can't afford to pay for the school, they can't stay in business if they don't find people jobs. I graduated from a Truck Driving School and every company that sent recruiters in, had tuition reimbursement programs. One (I believe it was Stevens Transportation) had an agreement with the school that (if they hired you), they'd pay the reimbursement out monthly and they'd pay the balance off if you stayed with them two full years.

Private school may not be everyone's best choice, but it's possible it might be the best option for you. It was for me, at the time.

As the others said, keep pressing on if you really want this.

I have been in touch with Steven’s and they are willing to train me. I got several rejection emails very quickly for the same reason so gave up. I live in Deming NM, about 100 miles West of El Paso. Many companies have a 50 mile radius from there. Thank you for the encouragement.

Good that you got in with a company for training!

Now, just a helpful comment - there will be plenty of bumps in the road ahead, both literal and figurative. Sometimes you will just have to be stubborn and determined, and DON'T GIVE UP. You will get tired and frustrated and scared, but stick with it.
