So I was planning on attending a private trucking school with a loan from the bank that my uncle would have co-signed, but it turns out he was outside of the lending area (bummer) for a couple days I decided to completely give up on the whole truck driving thing but then I back tracked and decided there was no reason to! I want to drive a truck and their are free options out there! I have made the decision that I really want to apply to Prime....they seem to be the most impressive to me after reading this sites list of company sponsored CDL schools. I have cold feet now tho! I'm staring at this computer with my stomach all twisted in knots trying to convince myself to hit the "apply" button on the prime website...ugg.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Dude! Breath. It doesn't cost a dime to hit "apply". If the info you get isn't what you like just say "Thanks. I'm keeping my options open".

EVERYONE is nervous when starting in this career but what you feel now is nothing compared to sitting behind the wheel the first time and then again when you first go solo. Then there is that first mountain pass you have to go down loaded or the first time you have to drive in city streets. My first solo run was 10' wide and into a residential neighborhood where they were building a new house and you know how those roads are built. My point is that all of your firsts are going to make you nervous.

Take a deep breath, calm your nerves and take things nice and slow. Don't ever let anyone rush you, that is when you make mistakes.

Good luck to you and click the submit button. I would rather share the road with someone that is a little nervous than one that is over confident. Your nervousness will make you more cautious and a better driver for it. You will gain confidence and those episodes will be fewer and fewer but that comes with experience.

BMI:

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

I'm going through Prime's orientation this week. In fact, I'm sitting in the Millenium Building right now. I finalized everything I needed yesterday as far as testing/background/permit and received my access badge this afternoon.

Anyways, if you have any specific questions about this program, I can answer them for you, since, well, I just went through it this week. I will say that I am happy with my decision and it's been a very positive experience so far.

Best of luck to you guys, I tired applying to prime training program but since I already had my cdl they wouldn't take me for the prime training program. I have no experience just got the license on my own, I guess they couldn't make any money off me from the government since I had my license.

They would have asked you to go through PSD in that situation, the same as a student without a CDL would do. I'm guessing you didn't want to do that.

PSD:

Prime Student Driver

Prime Inc has a CDL training program and the first phase is referred to as PSD. You'll get your permit and then 10,000 miles of on the road instruction.

The following is from Prime's website:

Prime’s PSD begins with you obtaining your CDL permit. Then you’ll go on the road with a certified CDL instructor for no less than 75 hours of one-on-one behind the wheel training. After training, you’ll return to Prime’s corporate headquarters in Springfield, Missouri, for final CDL state testing and your CDL license.

Obtain CDL Permit / 4 Days

  • Enter program, study and test for Missouri CDL permit.
  • Start driving/training at Prime Training Center in Springfield, Missouri.
  • Work toward 40,000 training dispatched miles (minimum) with food allowance while without CDL (Food allowance is paid back with future earnings).

On-the-Road Instruction / 10,000 Miles

  • Train with experienced certified CDL instructor for 3-4 weeks in a real world environment.
  • Get 75 hours of behind-the-wheel time with one-on-one student/instructor ratio.
  • Earn 10,000 miles toward total 40,000 miles needed.

Welp, I applied to prime over the internet and now I'm even more nervous! lol, and to add onto all that nervousness was having to read through all those DOT and federal pages that I had to consent to and words like "adverse action taken against you" my cheeks are so red now lol.

I however got really ****ed off because after I finished there was some sort of number that they recommend that I write down, and as I reached across the keyboard to grab a piece of paper I accidentally hit something on the keyboard that took me away from the screen, and now you cannot get back to it :( oh well.....at least I actually did it.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

That was the reference number they asked you to write down. No biggie!

Call tomorrow in the EARLY morning and speak to a recruiter. Don't wait for them to call you, you call them. Make sure they know that you want the job! They should be able to find your application using your SS number.

If you have any questions feel free to ask me, I'm an Instructor at Prime

What would generally take place during this phone call and for how long? I only ask because I have to be to work by the early morning. Also is their a specific recruiters number to call about the application?
