A couple weeks ago, I began applying to Driver's Solutions company-sponsored CDL training via their website. I was doing this during "down-time" at my current night-shift security guard job, so I did not have all the proper documents/information I needed to accurately complete the application. I figured, like every other online application I have ever filled out, I would be able to review and edit my application before submitting it. Perhaps I had a brain fart from being distracted at work, or maybe the browser I was using made it weird, but I swear after entering only my current job, which I've held for ~6 Months, I was pushed forward to the next part of the application. Still thinking there would be a chance to review and edit before submitting, which I planned to do the next day after making sure everything was accurate, I just kept going forward with the application. Next thing I know, the website says that my application is submitted, and to call my recruiter at such-and-such time tomorrow! WHOOPS! Anyways, I call the guy. He gives me some info and a website. I look in to it. He keeps pushing me forward in the process. I mean, that's his job, right? Anyway, I tell him I made mistakes on the app, especially with work history. But the recruiter just said, "Look, if you really have a clean criminal background and clean driving history, your work history really doesn't matter.". I took comfort in this, and figured, hey, guess it's good enough! He just kind of glanced through it and said, "The Federal Government might want to look in to your work history, but if that becomes an issue, we'll figure it out then." A few days later, I move forward in the process, and I get a "job offer"! I've continued moving forward. Got my DOT physical done. Since I'm in KY I gotta wait two weeks for permit approval. If all goes according to plan, I should be going to their driver school the 28th of this month. So far, this all sounds great to me. But then....I just had to go and read about horror stories where dudes get pulled off the truck by cops called in by the company they work for just because things were inaccurate on their application. Look, I'm taking the start of my career very seriously, and the last thing I want to do is set myself up for failure from the get-go because my recruiter isn't too worried about it. What do I do?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

BMI:

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

Does Driver Solutions actually hire drivers? It's up to the company you apply to to make sure their drivers are "set" in their application.

Since you haven't started yet, get all your documents & proofs ready & take them to school with you.

horror stories

Do you believe all the stories you read on the internet? Would you believe there was a headless chicken named "Mike"?

Don't sweat it. They're going to confirm everything before you're ultimately approved to drive for the company. And they weren't pulled off the truck by the police because of something minor. You can be sure it was a very big deal whatever it was. Could have been a past felony or DUI or who knows what.

Does Driver Solutions actually hire drivers?

They're the recruiter for USA Truck's company-sponsored training . Ultimately USA Truck has to approve each driver that Driver Solutions recruits.

Company-sponsored Training:

A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.

The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.

If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.

Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.

That's true Brett lol When I worked for Pepsi, 1 day I come in for my night shift, day guy tells me I missed all the fun earlier in the day.....Turns out this husky black guy who drove route truck, was heading out of the yard 1 morning, when 5 under cover cars, loaded with "G" men, rushed his truck, and yanked him out onto the ground, cuffed him off, and whisked him off........Turns out dude was transferring between Pepsi locations, every couple months. He was on the run for killing his girlfriend and her son back in Texas !!!

Oh, hey, Brett! I think you might have actually been one of the posters I saw mention the cop-yanking action because of application stuff. I do appreciate the further explanation on that! Well, cool. That definitely cools my jets to hear it's not as serious as all that. Well, guys, I should be heading up to DS in Indy towards the end of this month. This site has provided me with a ridiculous amount of insight. Based on what I've researched thus far, I do believe I am ready!

Yeah, it's good that this was a topic. I just did an app and talked with a recruiter with driver solutions and experienced the "lite" version of this same scenario. Being it was the lite version I wasn't as worried but I was concerned about some of the info being ....modified. Thanks again trucking truth and thanks seejaytron for posting this topic.

Yes Errol, yes I would believe in Mike the Headless Chicken. Doubly so, because Sept 10, 2015 was the 70th anniversary of Mike's beheading.

Mike S. drinks the chicken-aid:

This one of the reasons I push for only the truth on Trucking Truth. Nobody could think that up.

Wait, are you saying that folks in the 1940's, the time of the Greatest Generation, may have committed a hoax?

INCONCEIVABLE, I can see the Wikipedia page about it! HECK, there is even a web site dedicated to him! That's like corroboration, eh?
