Evening guys n gals. Today u got my 1st taste of what (presumably) Dollar General drivers deal with.

For those who don't know, I drive for Maverick, flatbed company. Thus morning I had to make a delivery to a jobsite smack dab in the middle of Baltimore md. Dispatch had no directions and construction made things questionable. After talking to the site manager I had some directions. I was told to pull into the turning lane and do a 90 into the lot with a fence on both sides. Little room on both sides with him attempting to hold traffic.

Apparently people in Baltimore don't care and almost no one stopped as I began backing. After dodging cars and my guide cursing at drivers I managed to get in. It was no cake walk. I have the utmost respect for local guys who do this daily. Would definitely recommend anyone considering dg accounts to get some experience behorehand.

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Lol I feel your pain I work for a construction company in Florida and either I contend with traffic or very small residential roads backing down driveways with my flat bed (60ft boom on it) or lowboy with heavy equipment. I do a lot of work on beachs so summer time is ungodly. Congrats

I feel your pain sir. I pick up in downtown Baltimore almost weekly. I hate that city lol.

And you speak the truth for local p&d guys. I did p&d for Old Dominion and thought I could do it no problem. After a few months and a couple of incidents I am no longer with them. Needless to say it takes a lot more skill than I was anticipating.

P&D:

Pickup & Delivery

Local drivers that stay around their area, usually within 100 mile radius of a terminal, picking up and delivering loads.

LTL (Less Than Truckload) carriers for instance will have Linehaul drivers and P&D drivers. The P&D drivers will deliver loads locally from the terminal and pick up loads returning to the terminal. Linehaul drivers will then run truckloads from terminal to terminal.

OD could be the best move you ever make. I regret screwing up my opportunity with them.

Care 8f I ask what happened? Also which terminal where you based in?

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

I don't mind. I had a couple small incidents while backing my trailer that resulted in me hitting something. The first two were minor resulting in no real damage to anything. The third however was bad. I was backing into a place I know I shouldn't have even tried. I got the trailer in ok but when u I pulled forward to straighten the tractor a little the right side of the trailer went over a parked car and did some serious damage to the front end. With OD they have a three incidents in a year and your done policy. In hindsight I was to eager to prove myself that I got sloppy and rushed. Luckily for me I left my previous company on good terms and they let me come back. I'm still kicking myself in the ass over it though.

I was based at the Portland Maine terminal.

That's unfortunate, maybe you could go back at some point. May be moving to alabama at some point. Will have to see what's available.

Apparently people in Baltimore don't care and almost no one stopped as I began backing

One time I had to back in off a busy four lane street with super wide sidewalks in Jersey City at like 8:30 in the morning. Complete nightmare. Jersey always is. So I swing out across all four lanes and my nose is all the way to the sidewalk. Just as I'm putting it in reverse to begin backing I see a cop's lights come on and I thought, "Awesome! He's going to block traffic for me while I get in here."

Suddenly the cop turns up onto the sidewalk to go around my nose. He gets past me, comes back off the sidewalk onto the roadway, turns off his lights, and continues on with his day. I was like, Thanks. So much for 'To Protect And To Serve' - unless you're serving donuts I'd guess.
