Pulling out of the fuel island at the TA in Aurora Oregon and I didn't pay attention to my mirrors.. went and bent my trailer wheel on the island curb and knocked over a trash can. What makes it worse is I was driving around the lot and didn't know I bent the wheel until everyone was staring at my trailer when I was going for a parking spot... pay attention.

Yup, let my guard down since my day was over. I haven't showered in days so I was excited to finally do so and forgot to watch them mirrors... but yeah it could have been worse.

Hey at least you didn't do my rookie mistake today. I ran out of fuel and got stranded on the shoulder of I-90 for 3 hours this morning. Only 34 miles from my fuel stop too...

We all have those days!

Definitely I did what Brett talked about of letting stuff bother me that lead to eventually me making this mistake. Been sitting a lot this month and its been getting me frustrated and today was the tipping point. Good thing it was just a bent wheel and not something worse.

Bummer! I.only had a 1/4 tank on my first solo dispatch and my fuel stop was 245 miles away. I figured i was still good to go. When the guard checking us out at the gate asked me if I needed fuel, I thought it was odd but didn't really think much more about it. When the low fuel warning came on and then it actually got down to E I was thinking they had actually played a cruel joke on the rookie. LOL

I only managed to get 165 gallons at the fuel stop so I don't really know what was going on. I thought most of these rigs had 200 gallon capacity.

Sorry to hear that Devan. It may only be considered an incident and not a preventable. Like Chickie said could have been worse.

I remember my favorite instructor when I was at the Richmond Academy barking: "watch your wagon driver, watch your wagon".

Forgive yourself but don't forget.

Jim,

Most trucks hold around 150 gallons of fuel. Check your average fuel mileage so you know har far you can go on a tank and then leave a little cushion.

I hit the concrete barrier by the fuel island and screwed up the tandems... so minor. At least there wasn't gallons of fuel shooting out!

Tandems:

Tandem Axles

A set of axles spaced close together, legally defined as more than 40 and less than 96 inches apart by the USDOT. Drivers tend to refer to the tandem axles on their trailer as just "tandems". You might hear a driver say, "I'm 400 pounds overweight on my tandems", referring to his trailer tandems, not his tractor tandems. Tractor tandems are generally just referred to as "drives" which is short for "drive axles".
