I was 22 when I went to work for a house mover in Fairfax, OK. That was 1976. I didn't need a CDL , heck, I'm not even sure the CDL license law existed back then. But I drove his Mack's and Internationals pulling I-beams and trailers to and from job sites. The only training I got was "Don't speed, this is the ignition key".

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Moving loaded log trailers from the landing to the truck pickup area, 16.

Chauffeurs license at 21.

OTR finally at 59.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

I first got my CDL 6 months ago at age 53. I have drove semi since I was 16 on the farm hauling from the farm to elevator. Started in an old early 70's model International cabover and now in a 2018 Cascadia with an automatic sleeper air and the whole works. There are some tight backing situations I get into now driving over the road where that old cabover would have been nice. The reason for the CDL was going from farming to driving for a company OTR.

A lot of you have probably answered this question in some manner on here already but how old were you when you started your driving career? 48 for me

Too old. I figure I can get a somewhat decent pension from FedEx if I retire when I'm 78.

I turned 53 while in training on the road. I am 62 now. My team driver was with a different trainer at the same time. He was 56 while in school. We still team drive together.
