Stumbled apon this article that claims driverless trucks will replace half of us by 2025.

End of long haul trucking

Misinformation like this keeps people away from a career in trucking imo as they think in 5 years they will be jobless.

Do not worry driverless trucks will not be threat to anyones career anytime soon.

😂😂😂 Every time my phone, computer, Qualcomm , etc freezes up and crashes, I laugh at the driverless truck concept again. 🤣 Maybe in 30 years. Maybe never.

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.

The guy who wrote that fake news article is the one who should be out of a job. Not in 5 years, but immediately. I'm calling total BS on that one.

Better start filling out applications and updating the resume.

They'll still need us to sit there and watch the truck drive itself, while enjoying a good movie...

HALF the drivers? No. I'd like to see these automated trucks drive through blizzards in Wyoming. Radar doesn't work in snow. It can't "see." And just navigating through construction areas will be a challenge for these automated trucks.

Until I see a "driverless" truck pull over at 2 am and chain up to cross Donner Pass, I am not worried.

Brett wrote a very good article debunking all the autonomous truck talk. It definitely put me at easy. I do think that the job will change in the coming years. Maybe something where we could do some sort of auto pilot while on the highway in safe conditions for a period of time. But there’s just too much for the transportation industry to be automated.

Not all of us have your mad skills of chaining. I would be parked

I remember going through commercial diving school in 94'. The big talk then was how R.O.V.s (Remotely Operated Vehicle) were gonna put us divers out of work. IT NEVER HAPPENED !! Sure they have their use. 10k feet of water is lightyears beyond the capabilities of the human body. But in the average (shallower than 300') muddy, 0 visibility water. The ROV is rendered useless.

So my feelings are that with all of the variables that a computer can't anticipate, (actions of 4 wheelers) they will never take over. The face of trucking may change, but there will always be a need for us human truckers.
