Jumping ship from my current company. My best offers are from Hellwig and Marten. Both companies would require me to do refrigerated. I have no problem with driving reefer. Any suggestions about what company to go with?

Reefer:

A refrigerated trailer.

I haven't heard much about Helwig... It's hard to offer an educated opinion without knowing what's being offered. What's on the table?

JS Helwig and Son?

More importantly, what is it you're looking for in your next job? Give me your preferences and I'll see what I can find. No cost or obligation.

I have a friend who has been with Marten for 7 years now and he has very few complaints. The worst was an issue with a truck he was in that just kept breaking down but it wasn’t ready for turn back so they kept throwing money at it. He put his foot down after a while and wound up in a brand new truck and has had no problems since. Mind you, that truck issue he dealt with isn’t all that common, it’s just the only complaint he’s ever had and I talk to him a few times a week.

As you know, Michael still loves Marten after 10 months.

He cares less about money but is doing well. Sometimes they have too much time allotted between pickup and delivery so he doesn't get many miles in that week but he just enjoys the ride more and takes his time in those situations. They seem to throw extra money his way for small things that aren't explained at the time. He sometimes makes deliveries of non-refrigerated products and sometimes gets paid $100 or $200 for those deliveries on top of his miles. He is presently paid 64 CPM as long as he delivers on time and submits paperwork on time.

His Kenworth T680 had transmission problems his second week on the job and was in the shop for much of the week and he got paid his guaranteed weekly pay. It was worked well since then except one time, driving up a moderate grade, would not shift into gear and he had to quickly get to the shoulder. He did a battery disconnect to reset the computer. Highway patrol came up and asked why he didn't have his flashers on, etc. and they apparently had seen that before and understood. He get it resolved quickly and drove to the next offramp suggested by patrol to confirm everything was okay. He still likes his truck a lot. Over one causeway north of here when he drove for CRE he said he would almost feel seasick and noticed on his first drive over it in the Kenworth at how much smoother it was.

BMI:

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

CPM:

Cents Per Mile

Drivers are often paid by the mile and it's given in cents per mile, or cpm.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.
