Hello All,

I want to begin this post by thanking so many people who have helped me by giving timely and honest advice either directly or through posts I have perused, to get me on the right track to my trucking career. Big shout outs to PackRat, Chief Brody, RiehlDiehl, Pacific Pearl, Kearsey, G-town, Ryan B., Davy A., Pianoman, Rob T., BK, Old School, and of course Brett. I know I am forgetting some folks beyond this group so forgive me.

So here are the developments from the last 24 hours:

1) I passed my DOT physical w/ flying colors.

2) Passed the CLP w/ flying colors.

3) My self paid hair follicle test came back negative after 92 days of detox (and will remain negative until hell freezes over. No more white collar party rules, now OSHA and common sense rules for a safe and successful career)

4) I have my application in, all DMV and personal background checks, and video interview done at Veriha Trucking. Recruiter has all my info submitted and pending their blessing CDL training starts March 6th!!

Some of you may recall I was dead set on Roehl. When I started actively mentioning trucking in my rural community Veriha's name came up EVERY time. After looking into it, they have a great pay plan and most important REGIONAL is 5.5 days out and guaranteed 48 hours home time. To give you an idea of how small my community is, I found out one of the realtors I networked with in my prior career was a trainer there and a good friend from church is a long time friend and business partner of John Veriha. All good press. Plus I'm an hour away from home so I can come home for 24 during training on the weekends AND also see my daughter on her 11th birthday on March 25th (hopefully I pass my CDL test the day before)!

I will be starting my training diary in early March if everything comes together. I'll also include some perks and comp info. Thanks again to all!!!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

BMI:

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

CLP:

Commercial Learner's Permit

Before getting their CDL, commercial drivers will receive their commercial learner's permit (CLP) upon passing the written portion of the CDL exam. They will not have to retake the written exam to get their CDL.

You have planned your work and worked your plan, congratulations to you on putting it all together!

(And hell is going to freeze over? Just great. Six more weeks of winter)

I hope the best for you. I've got to say I am nervous about your hair follicle test. I know you are serious about staying clean, but 90 days is a very short threshold. Please keep us informed - I seriously want to see you make a great start.

Thanks guys!

OS, I have already addressed those concerns. I paid $200 to a medical diagnostics lab to have a five panel hair follicle test done which included marijuana and it was examined by a laboratory and signed off by a medical research officer as a negative result.

Thanks for all you do for the forum! I look forward to drawing upon more of your wisdom down the road 🙏🏻👍

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Yeah, I saw you had taken that precaution. I've just seen so many folks confident they can pass because they tested themselves, only to have their hopes dashed because the trucking company paid for a test that reached back a little further.

It's a gamble, but I am confident you understand it better than most. I hope to hear soon that you are employed by Veriha. Congratulations on your detox results.

Hopefully it goes well and you do well. I know you have put in tge work on keeping clean, Hopefully you keep that up as well. Remember that no one specific company will define your success, rather your attitude and performance will. As OS points out, Hopefully also that the tests work out in your favor but keeping in mind that there is inherent risk there.
