What is a good company to work for that your home every weekend, Does not have cameras in the truck that they switch on whenever they want, call you every time you supposedly take a turn to fast, don't stop at a stop sign soon enough, drive 3 min over, and has a GPS that actually works just for starters

Hello, Allison and welcome to Trucking Truth. I'm wondering where you got these questions. The short answer for you is that such a company does not exist. No tucking company is built on allowing their drivers to be sloppy. All trucking companies are built on helping their drivers to be safe and on time. That's what it's all about.

You must be reading in other forums about the cameras. It seems drivers dislike them so much that many companies are shutting off the inside/driver cam. And they never "switch on whenever they want" anyway.

Your concerns about worrying that drivers stop or turn too fast are true. But there is no one hovering over some monitor somewhere watching your driving skills in action. Paranoia is too distracting, and I, for one, don't waste my time on such fantasies.

Company installed GPS units are fine. I used one for three years without much of a glitch. Maybe they're a bit clunkier than a Rand McNally TND 730, but they are almost guaranteed to get you there. Sure, pick up your own trucking GPS when you can.

Here's some reading material that might prove as you learn about the trucking business:

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

So I work for Roehl Transport. I get home every week for my 34 hour reset. I have an event recorder in my truck. When I drive like an idiot, it records 10 seconds before and 10 seconds after the event. It has helped me become a better driver. Roehl will deactivate the camera once you prove that you can drive “The Roehl Way” ...which is driven to protect others.

I’ve never received a phone call saying I turned too fast or didn’t stop properly at a stop sign. I can tell you if I ever receive a call like that I would simply say thank you, I’ll try to be a little more careful.

I’ve had some HoS violations...never got a call. My co-pilot works just fine...sometimes the driver doesn’t follow it as closely.

Your first post here seems a little short. Have you had a bad experience with a company? I don’t want to judge you...but it’s just they way your post read.

Good luck with your search!!

I'm thinking she's already a disgruntled driver (or knows one) that is looking for a change....?

Let me get this straight? You want to drive someone else’s $200K piece of equipment recklessly, have no one watch over you & not learn how to read a map?! Oh & get weekends off to boot!! All as a rookie driver!!! Good luck with that & hope you did use your real name on this post, cause companies do research these sites regularly.

Splitter I emphatically agree with everything you replied with, except the above. Unless you can back a statement like that with firsthand proof, it doesn't belong here.

Let's keep it real.

It took me 3 yrs to get that type job. I enjoy my freedom however I have earned every piece of it. However its totally up to me to manage it properly, which my boss knows I will do safely and efficiently.

Alicia, welcome to our forum!

Your questions are certainly understandable. Many people ask the same questions as they start this career. Any type of research one would do could easily lead you to want to know these kinds of things. I'm hoping we can steer you in a little different direction, one that will help you better understand the path to success out here. Everyone seems to think it's all about the company we work for, when the reality is that it's all in how we approach this job.

Take a look at this article about What It Takes To Be A Successful Truck Driver, and see if that doesn't help you see the things you need to be focused on.

I know one of the recruiters at H. O. Wolding reads the forums now and again. But only because a driver that applied mentioned me by name on this site. So she checks in on here every now and again.

G-Town, with all due respect, I emphatically stand by EVERY word in my post. I’m not going to sit here & justify or quantify anything. It’s as real as Patrick’s response & many more instances throughout the internet of people being fired for things they say or post in public forums. TT is no exception.

If you don’t agree, feel free to delete both that post & this one too. That’s as real as it gets.
