Are lease operators subject to the sleep apnea/CPAP requirements for company drivers?

Sleep Apnea:

A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.

In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.

It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.

CPAP:

Constant Positive Airway Pressure

CPAP is a breathing assist device which is worn over the mouth or nose. It provides nighttime relief for individuals who suffer from Sleep Apnea.

Sure are. If they get their required DOT physical performed, and the medical personnel recommends them for a sleep study and they prescribe a CPAP , they must show compliance. It’s a major item with the insurance companies.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Stop being mean guys. We have a newbie here who needs to learn, that is all.

Something interesting I got on my QC recently about Walmart... We have always been told that Walmart counts us as a "Service Failure" if we drop the load early or even call to move up the appointment ourselves. Many lease ops do it anyway so they can rush rush rush. This week I got a message saying that Walmart reduces the freight rates by 3%. So a $100,000 load is now $3,000 less.... that reduction rolls down to reduced freight shipping costs.. and less money in the lease op pockets than they originally expected.

As for the DOT physicals, yes, the lease ops must comply if the doctor they chose requires it. Lease ops are not obligated to get their physicals done at the company doctor---at least not at my company---because they pay for their own physical, they can choose whomever they wish. And let's face it, we all know there are some quacks out there that will give you whatever you want.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
